WG Athletic Community Receives Sportsmanship Promotion Award

NYSPHSAA LogoOn June 15, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced West Genesee High School (Section III) as a 2016-2017 winners of its Sportsmanship Promotion program.

The award is presented to schools which have developed proactive approaches in keeping sportsmanship in the forefront with their students, coaches, spectators, and communities. West Genesee High School is a first time Banner Award winner in 2017.

Some of the ways which we promote positive sportsmanship include greeting opposing teams as they enter their school and honoring the visiting team’s senior players on senior night. Each of West Genesee’s athletic teams recognize at least one sportsmanship winner per team at the end of the season. Additionally, the athletic department recognizes one male and one female student-athlete that exemplifies sportsmanship at the end of each school year.

"The West Genesee Athletic community is very honored and excited to receive the NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Promotion Banner Award," said Mike Burns, West Genesee Athletic Director. "Our coaches, athletes, administration and student body work hard at promoting a solid atmosphere that promotes sportsmanship, integrity and class. The programs that we have in place stress the importance of the fact that the behavior and actions of both our teams and spectators are a reflection on our school and community as a whole."

This year marks the 20th year that deserving schools have been recognized by the NYSPHSAA’s Sportsmanship Promotion program, all of which will be honored at the NYSPHSAA’s Central Committee Meeting Luncheon on July 25th in Clayton, NY.
