arrow bulletTeaching Center - Voucher System

Introduction

A unique feature of the Teaching Center is the existence of a tuition voucher system. Syracuse University graduate credit vouchers are awarded to the Teaching Center. Voucher credits are generated by teachers and administrators who host Syracuse University preservice education students. These credits are placed in a Teaching Center voucher pool and are used by teachers or administrators to enroll in Syracuse University courses offered on campus or university approved courses offered by the Teaching Center.

There are two forms of vouchers: 1) Individual Vouchers for courses offered through Syracuse University 2) Teaching Center Vouchers for courses offered through the Teaching Center.

Applications for Individual Vouchers for Summer/Fall courses at SU must be submitted to the Teaching Center early in May.

e.g. apply for Individual Voucher in October for a course offered the following Spring.  (apply in October of 2000 for a course offered in Spring of 2001).

Applications for Individual Vouchers for Summer/Fall 2012 are available at right in PDF and Word template format.

e.g. apply in March for a course offered the following Summer/Fall. (apply in March of 2001 for a course offered in Summer/Fall 2001).

Teachers are allowed one Individual Voucher per semester, not to exceed 6 credits from September to September in any given year.

Teachers wishing to use a Teaching Center Voucher do not need to apply but must submit their reservation to the Teaching Center indicating their desire to participate in a given course.  These vouchers are automatic and will be awarded subject to the supply of credits available in the voucher pool.

A part-time teacher may apply for a Teaching Center Voucher but is not eligible for an Individual Voucher. Teachers who are non-probationary teachers (permanent or regular substitutes) are not eligible to use vouchers.

All other members of the Teaching Center who are not West Genesee teachers (Bishop Ludden, Holy Family and St. Ann's) are not eligible to use vouchers. Teachers not eligible to use vouchers may participate and earn graduate credit by making direct payment for courses.

  • To establish a system whereby an individual may acquire graduate credits related to specific staff development which enhances an individual's teaching area and provides continuous learning and professional development.

  • To establish a system whereby an individual may acquire graduate credits to assist him/her in acquiring an advance degree.

  • To establish a system whereby an individual may acquire and apply graduate credits toward additional payment on the teacher's salary schedule.

A. Can earn up to six (6) graduate credits per semester with a cap of 9 graduate credits from September to September for applicants seeking a combination of Individual and Teaching Center vouchers.

B. Allow for an award of one (1) Individual Voucher per semester not to exceed 6 credits in a given year (September to September).

C. Applicants who are seeking a first-time Individual Voucher will be given priority over those seeking a second Individual Voucher in a given year, September to September.

D. Those seeking a second Individual Voucher in a given year, September to September, will be given consideration if they have a positive balance in their service accounts.

E. Part-time teachers must apply for a Teaching Center Voucher.

F. Non-probationary teachers (Regular or Permanent Substitutes) are not eligible to use vouchers.

G. Bishop Ludden, St. Ann's and Holy Family teachers are not eligible to use vouchers.

H. Any individual ineligible to use vouchers may obtain credit if they are willing to pay the graduate tuition fee.

1. Requests for Individual Vouchers to be used during the Spring semester are distributed in late October and due back at the Teaching Center by late November. The committee meets in November to make recommendations at the December Directing Council meeting so people can be notified before winter recess.

2. Requests for Individual Vouchers to be used during the Summer/Fall semester are distributed in late March and due back at the Teaching Center by the middle of May. The committee meets at the end of May to make recommendations at the May Directing Council meeting.

3. The Voucher Committee also reviews any applications that are received from part-time teachers who desire to use a Teaching Center Voucher during the Fall or Spring semester.  Applications for the Fall are given to new part-time teachers during District Orientation and made available to former/continuing part-time teachers when they return the first day teachers begin the new school year. Applications for Spring requests are sent out in October and due back at the Teaching Center in November so the committee can meet and make recommendations at the December Directing Council meeting.

4. Teachers who are unable to host preservice teachers from Syracuse University may also be awarded vouchers. A system has been developed to recognize various forms of service provided to the district and Teaching Center. Hours of service are converted by a formula to assign voucher credits.
