The West Genesee District-Wide Diversity Committee will host the 6th Annual Culture Fair on Saturday, March 22 from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the high school. The West Genesee PTA/PTO District Council, Camillus PBA, Tops Friendly Markets will be sponsoring the event.

On February 26, eight students gave speeches around the theme, "How My Passions Impact the World" to members of the Camillus Optimist Club. The Optimists chose John (Jack) Howes from CMS and Katherine Baldwin from WGMS to represent them at the zone level of the 2014 Oratorical Contest that will be held later this month in their respective Girl and Boy Division. On February 12, families had the opportunitity to view projects that were displayed at a celebration of learning called the Winter "Wonder"land. This was a culmination of a month-long Project Based Learning experience at Stonehedge that began in mid-January that involved K-2 students, faculty, staff, and several parent volunteers. Dr. Brown has posted an update to his Notes from the Superintendent where he shares that the Board of Regents has been meeting regarding the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards [CCLS] in New York State. The Academic Decathlon was held at Westhill High School on January 25 with the team from West Genesee placing third overall, behind Westhill and the team from Cazenovia that placed first. They brought home a total of 18 medals from the whole competition. The top three teams will advance to the state competition at SUNY Brockport to be held on February 28 - March 1.
As the role of educational technology continues to evolve, we believe personal electronic device applications now play a role in the acquisition of new knowledge, teaching of organizational skills, and fostering responsible use among students and teachers. With this in mind, West Genesee High School will be piloting a new policy regarding the use of personal electronic devices starting Monday, February 3 through the remainder of the school year. Congratulations to Senior Girls Basketball player Melissa Fumano who broke the 1000 point scoring mark last night in a game against Oswego. Melissa becomes just the 3rd female player in West Genesee history to reach this landmark!

We will be piloting a new after school snack program from December 2, 2013 through December 20, 2013. This program will allow high school students to purchase healthy snacks and drinks from 2:15 p.m. through 3:15 p.m. Monday to Friday in Cafeteria 1. This program is designed to be open for students waiting for practices, yet still allowing time for students to grab a quick snack after interaction time.
Seussical the Musical will take center stage this weekend at Camillus Middle School on November 22 at 7:00 p.m. and November 23 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $6.00 at the door.
Kyle Jenkins and Grace Walker at WGMS; Sophia Valerino and John Howes at CMS; and Emily Cook and Michael Richards at the high school were honored by the Camillus Optimists with the David Kenna Youth Appreciation Awards. Split Rock Elementary School teacher Melanie Callahan, WGMS mathematics teacher Kathleen Byrne, and high school teacher Leandra Kovalchik received the 2013 Joseph A. Witowski Teacher of the Year Award.
West Genesee residents approved the Capital Project Referendum and Turf Field Reserve Fund propositions on November 12, 2013. The $24,305,200 Capital Project received 863 favorable votes and 218 votes in opposition. A second proposition to create a reserve fund for the turf field was approved 833 to 256. West Genesee Middle School eighth grader, Jason Loustaunau faced-off against Camillus Middle School seventh grader, Rose Hays spelling such words as "caricatured" and "unilaterally" until Loustaunau emerged as the first place winner in the West Genesee Spelling Bee held on November 7.
The Wildcats took 1st place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey Saturday night, November 2, with a score of 95.687! The NYS Field Band Conference 2013 National Class winners won their first National title since 1990 at the USBand National Championship.
Congratulations to the Wildcat Marching Band for winning the NYS Field Band Conference Championship with a score of 96.25! Way to go!!!!! West Genesee 96.25; Norwalk (CT) 93.95; Victor 93.75; Arlington 93.15; Brentwood 90.85; Liverpool 90.45; Orchard Park 87.25; and Baldwinsville 86.90.

At the beginning of the school year, the District was notified by the New York State Eduction Department that Split Rock Elementary School has been designated a Reward School. This signifies that the school is among those in New York State that has made the highest performance with no significant gaps in student achievement. High school English teacher, Keith Newvine, is initiating a community reading project called "One Book, One Town: Everyone Reads". He has selected a book called Petey by Ben Mikaelsen. Due to the expected rain today, the start of top-course paving between Knowell Road and Clark Lane has been postponed until tomorrow. We expect to be finished on Friday, weather permitting. Senior, Rachael Elsey of West Genesee High School, Camillus, NY, has been selected to be a member of the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. She will join an elite group of musicians who will perform during halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

On July 1, 2013, Paula Brillo was appointed by the Board of Education to the Director of Counseling and Student Services starting July 22, 2013. She is preceded by Kay Merrick, who retired from the District at the end of June.

Sixty-eight students and recent graduates of West Genesee High School have been named Advanced Placement Scholars by The College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations.
Thirty-nine WGHS students had a total of forty-nine perfect scores on their Advanced Placement examinations in May.

West Genesee residents approved the 2013-2014 budget and bus proposition on May 21, 2013. The $73,294,075 budget received 1,335 favorable votes, and 265 votes in opposition. One hundred forty-eight students from West Genesee High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society at the High School on November 19, 2012 and March 25, 2013. On March 24, middle school students from WGMS competed in the Central New York Science and Engineering Fair sponsored by the MOST and Lockheed Martin.
On April 10, 2013, Jeannette Clark was appointed by the Board of Education to the principal's position at Onondaga Road Elementary School starting July 1, 2013. She is preceded by Deborah Geiss, who will retire from the District at the end of June.
The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has announced the results of its fourteenth annual "Best Communities for Music Education" survey, which acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support of music education in schools. This is the eighth time West Genesee has been recognized for this honor.
