As a returning West Genesee Middle School student or as one attending our school for the very first time, the following information should help to get you started in the right direction as we begin the new school year.
If you are a grade 7 or 8 student, your homeroom number is on the label of the envelope of this back-to-school packet. Enclosed with this newsletter, you will find a copy of your bus schedule, information regarding required health procedures, and important information about our federal school lunch program. Also included in your mailing is the District’s 2010-2011 Events Calendar and Information Guide. We think that you will find this a great resource for answering questions and planning your schedule for the school year.
In order to minimize first-day confusion for our new students, we invite all sixth graders, all other new students and parents to attend a casual open house on Wednesday, September 1st, from 3:00 until 6:00 PM. Grade 6 students will receive their homeroom assignment along with their locker combination when they arrive on September 1st. Please contact the Guidance Office if you are unable to attend. This is presented as an opportunity for you to come to school, find your homeroom, try your locker combination, and walk through the building. Staff members and PTA members will be on hand to help you find your way around. Additionally, returning students who would like to get a head start in bringing supplies to their locker are also welcome. Please feel free to come in anytime between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM and visit us and our building. We ask students not to bring in school supplies on September 7th. Teachers will be having a workshop that day.
Our first day of school will be Wednesday, September 8th. If you are not riding a school bus, try to be here by 7:40 AM. This will allow you plenty of time to get settled before homeroom period, which begins at 7:55 AM. This will be a full day of school; therefore, make plans for lunch. A student lunch will be available in our cafeteria for $1.85. As always, milk and ice cream will be available as well. Bring pencils and paper with you on the 8th. A school supply list was sent to you in our June mailing and is also posted on our website (westgenesee.org). If you need a second copy or did not receive a list in June, please give us a call or stop by the school so that we can get one to you. There are special requirements for each team.
We're looking forward to meeting you and your parents very soon. In the meantime, enjoy the remaining days of your summer vacation!

We have exciting news to share with you regarding the communication and accessibility of your child’s grades. For many years we have used an electronic grading system known as MyGradebook (MGB). We have recently decided to make grades available using the Internet and a secure password which will be assigned to each student and their parents/guardians. Parents and students will now have the opportunity to check their progress throughout the school year in addition to receiving paper progress reports every 5 weeks. We will continue to provide a printed 10 week report card four times per year. Households without Internet access may request a printed report anytime by calling the Guidance Office. We believe that this tool will assist students in monitoring their academic progress as well as build responsibility for the completion of assignments. Passwords and directions for accessing the MGB site will be mailed home on September 17th. Please look for this information in the mail.
