WEST GENESEE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2018

MINUTES of the REGULAR MEETING of the BOARD OF EDUCATION held JANUARY 17, 2018 at the West Genesee High School Library.

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by President Roberta Herron at 7:00 p.m.

President Herron led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

The Superintendent opened his remarks by commenting on the recent Dialogue with the Superintendent. He then spoke about the power issues over the past couple weeks at the High School as well as at the West Genesee Middle School/Stonehedge/District Office campus and thanked all the people who worked overnight getting things in order. He then spoke about the new West Side Support Network and also gave an overview of the Governor’s budget. He ended with a tribute to long-time coach Joe Adams.

OPEN FORUM

Dr. Brown recognized the remarkable achievements of Ryan Gentilcore and Caroline Lopez for their CNY Leaders of Tomorrow Awards.

STUDY SESSION TOPICS

State of the District – Dr. Brown gave a brief overview of the State of the District. The discussion covered instruction, pathways to graduation, and the well-being of children. The academic discussion focused on communication, class size, technology, and staff development. In Operations, Dr. Brown discussed future capital projects, the Transportation and Food Service departments. He then reviewed the budget development process and the challenges of managing the tax cap and State Aid.

Thought Exchange – Following the State of the District report, Dr. Brown reviewed the Thought Exchange community survey that was completed and analyzed.

Superintendent Goals – Dr. Brown closed his presentation with an update on his annual goals, agreed to with the Board of Education.

It is recommended that the Board of Education of the West Genesee Central School District accept the recommendations of the CPSE Review meeting dates of December 20, 2017, January 3, and 4, 2018; CSE Review meeting dates of December 4, 18, 19, 21, 22, 2017, January 4, 8, and 9, 2018; and Building Level Review meeting dates of December 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 2017, January 4, and 8, 2018 ; thereby agreeing to make necessary arrangements for program implementation.

Policies and Bylaws Committee – Neil Widrick noted that the next meeting is Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Teaching Center – Karen Fruscello noted that the next meeting will be Monday, February 5,
2018.

Parent Curriculum Information Council – Eric Bacon reported that the East Hill Elementary
School staff shared their Collective Responsibility model for student support. The next meeting is Tuesday, February 27, 2018.

Ad Hoc Employee Benefits Committee – Neil Widrick noted that the next meeting is Monday,
February 12, 2018.

SEPTSA – Vladimiro Hart-Zavoli noted that the next meeting is Tuesday, February 13, 2018.
