USDA Free Meal Program Extended Again! (Posted on October 21, 2020)

On October 16, 2020 the NYS Education Department shared that the USDA is extending the free meal program for all students now through June 30, 2021.The New York State Education Department (SED) has elected the use of the Nationwide waiver flexibilities provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to allow free meals to continue to be available to all children throughout the entire 2020-2021 school year.

Update (Posted on October 2, 2020)

We would like to thank you for your patience as we started this school year with a very different food service program.  As you may or may not know, we have transitioned to servicing hot meals in October.  We are very excited to be able to do this.

One issue we have discovered is the meals you pre-ordered from the “old” October menu (all cold meals) may be different from the meals your child is receiving in school.  Please take a moment to review your pre-orders for October compared to the new October menus which can be found at https://westgenesee.nutrislice.com/menu/.

If you are ok with the new menu offering, you do not need to do anything.  If you do not want the new meal offering, please cancel your order for that day and re-order accordingly.

Thank you again for your patience, especially during this transition back to a more traditional menu.

Have a great weekend.

Update (Posted on September 4, 2020)

We are looking forward to kicking off the 2020-2021 school year next Thursday, September 10. Please make sure that you read the food service information letter at https://www.westgenesee.org/school-building-meal-program/.

A couple of thoughts when reading this are as follows:

  1. Create a Nutrislice account for pre-ordering.
  2. Make sure that your child’s MySchoolBucks account is funded. (See the Meal Program Information article at https://www.westgenesee.org/school-building-meal-program/ for more info.)
  3. Remote learners may also order meals, but must be in bundles and be ordered a week ahead. (See the Meal Program Information article at https://www.westgenesee.org/school-building-meal-program/ for more info.) – First Order Due Date is Monday September 7 for the week of September 14.)
  4. In person meals must also be preordered on Nutrislice. (First Order Due Date is Wednesday September 9 for September 10. We encourage pre-ordering by the week or month.)
  5. Your child’s MySchoolBucks account will not be charged until the service day has passed.
  6. Pre-ordered meals can be cancelled per the Meal Program Information article at https://www.westgenesee.org/school-building-meal-program/.

USDA Free Meal Program

On August 31, 2020 the USDA announced that they would be extending the free meal program for all students through December 31, 2020 OR until funding runs out. Since we do not know when this funding will run out, we are recommending that for September you fund your Child’s MYSchoolBucks account as you normally would. Please be assured that we will not charge your child’s account for reimbursable meals that they purchase as long as the funding continues, hopefully through December 31, 2020. We will continue to keep you posted on this as things develop.

2020-21 Free & Reduced Price Meal Application Available

I would like to take a moment to get you information regarding the National School Lunch Program.  As we are sure you can imagine, planning for the 2020-2021 school year is certainly a unique experience.  I would like to provide all of you with an early opportunity to review the National School Lunch Program information that can be found on our websiteIn an effort to minimize the surge of applications that we typically get in September, we are encouraging you to fill these out as soon as possible, if you believe that you qualify for free or reduced price meals.  Please be assured that if your situation changes between the time that you submit your application and school starts, or at any point during the school year, you can certainly fill out a new application for free or reduced price meals.

Spring Emergency Meal Provision Expiration

Last Spring, with the onset of the COVID19 shutdown, a provision was approved by the Department of Education to provide all students with a free meal program.  It is important to note that this free meal program has expired and your children will be charge the appropriate amount for their meals, based on eligibility status.  Should this provision be available again at any point, we will immediately notify you of the availability.

Meal Programs and Costs

We will provide all students with access to breakfast and lunch options during the 2020-21 school year, regardless if you are in-person or doing remote instruction.  All students will be charged for their meals based on their eligibility status.  Our meal prices will remain the same for the 2020-21 school year as follows:

Breakfast – $1.75

Elementary Lunch – $2.70

Middle & High School Lunch – $2.85

Our tentative plan is to have meals picked-up, or delivered when necessary, to full-time remote learners and M-W remote learners, on Monday of each week.  Students that are remote from Wednesday to Friday will pick-up or have meals delivered on Wednesday.

Remote Ordering Through Nutrislice

We are in the process of implementing a new remote ordering system that is tied into our online menu system through Nutrislice.  This system/App will allow parents to order meals for their children by a predetermined cut off time for the next day.  We will also have an option to order for the entire week if you so desire.  Please be assured that we will also have a cancellation feature, by a pre-determined deadline each morning, should your child be absent.  Please be on the lookout for more information and tutorials once we roll this program out.
