Letter from Supt. Bills: Update regarding mask mandates

June 8, 2021

Dear parents/guardians, students, and community members,

This letter is provided as an update to a letter from June 6 that indicated no official legal change in mask mandates.

The New York State Department of Health released official updated guidance of the document entitled “INTERIM GUIDANCE FOR IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION AT PRE-K TO GRADE 12 SCHOOLS DURING THE COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY” specifically addressing mask wearing/face coverings. From that document, face masks are no longer required to be worn outdoors on school grounds, including during outdoor school sports.

After reviewing the updated guidance, West Genesee Schools will no longer require masks/face coverings for outdoor activities and events. Students, staff and visitors will no longer be required to wear face masks outdoors on school grounds, including during outdoor school sports. Wearing a mask outdoors will be left up to the discretion of each individual. It is important to note, we will maintain protocols and procedures for physical distancing when on school grounds.

Masks will still be required to be worn by all individuals when inside all school buildings, buses, and District offices.

Completed COVID-19 health screening questionnaires are still required for all staff, students and visitors. Anyone experiencing symptoms is not permitted to attend school or any school events.

Thank you for your continued patience as we navigate through the remaining days of the school year.

Sincerely,

David C. Bills
Superintendent of Schools
West Genesee Central School District
