Update from Supt Bills on May 18, 2020: Personal Items/School Year/Budget Vote

To All Students and Families,

Governor Cuomo’s recent Executive Order included the continuation of remote learning for the remainder of the academic school year. This brings with it related questions and topics. This message is intended for some clarification and new information.

School Year

The order declared that school buildings would remain closed and instruction delivered remotely for the remainder of the school year. Based on our calendar and the amount of days/hours typically defining a school year, the last day for students will be Tuesday, June 16, 2020.

Personal Items

The closing of school buildings occurred quickly and therefore gathering of belongings and typical year-end closing procedures are still needed. The administrative team has been coordinating plans for the retrieval of these items within each of the school buildings. Information is being disseminated for a coordinated way to open buildings through procedures and timelines that remain appropriate to the ongoing health crisis. Look for information from principals of each building for information and planning on the appropriate dates.

Note: A separate communication will be sent in upcoming weeks regarding plans for Chromebooks that have been distributed to support remote learning.

Budget Vote and Board of Education Election

The Annual Budget Vote and Board of Education Election is designated for Tuesday, June 9, 2020. Initial information has gone out to describe the process of mail-in voting. While that information stated that each household would receive “at least one ballot” it is important to know our planning includes a mailing on or about May 26, 2020 that will include a ballot for every eligible voter per voter registration. This information is provided to us by Onondaga County. If you do not receive the proper amount of ballots in the next mailing, please contact 2020budgetvote@westgenesee.org immediately for a correction. All ballots must be received by 5:00 p.m. on June 9, 2020.

If you would like to review information regarding budget procedures, including a brief Q & A, please go to the following link on our website. To check registration directly, go to West Genesee Poll Place Finder by clicking here.

If you are not on our eligible registration listing on this site and believe that is in error, please email 2020budgetvote@westgenesee.org and we will assure that you are on the mailing and added to our list.

Graduation

We continue to research ways to recognize the Class of 2020 with a ceremony to be determined. Our exploration and inquiries are being shared with the Onondaga County Health Department and County Executive Ryan McMahon’s office to be sure we operate within guidelines and the potential “Phases” of reopening throughout our region specific to New York State. We hope to have more specific information very soon.

Be well and stay safe.
