Dear Parents/Guardians,
The West Genesee Central School District is committed to providing the highest quality of education for every student. Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multilevel approach to providing differentiated support to all students. The Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework takes the RtI framework to the next level by providing multiple levels of support for all learners. MTSS requires teachers, administrators, district personnel, and student support specialists to move toward a more intensive degree of working together collaboratively and cohesively for learner success.
This means that we will do whatever it takes for all of our learners to be successful. Our collective responsibility model helps to ensure every child receives additional time and support needed to learn at high levels. Some students require interventions or additional practice to meet essential learning targets. In other cases, students who have already met the essential learning targets need to be challenged with additional opportunities. We strive to provide students with what they need as soon as they need it. Therefore, to determine if students are meeting grade-level expectations, every child will be screened during multiple key points of the year (fall, winter, spring) to measure progress in reading and math. Our teachers will provide a variety of approaches to ensure each student’s success. When assessments show that interventions are needed, some may take place within the classroom and some may take place outside the classroom with an Instructional Specialist.
The West Genesee Central School District’s RtI model uses a three-tiered approach to targeted instruction:
Tier 1- Classroom teachers will use a variety of strategies within the core curriculum to address individual instructional needs. Targeted instruction based on student needs may be provided by a teacher, teaching assistant or Instructional Specialist.
Tier 2- Based on district assessments; students will be provided additional targeted instruction. This service may be provided within the classroom or in a separate location. Instructional Specialists and teachers will monitor student progress.
Tier 3-Based on district assessments; students will be provided more intensive targeted intervention by an Instructional Specialist or teacher. This service may be provided within the classroom or in a separate location. Instructional Specialists or teacher will monitor student progress and parents will receive reports.
Targeted instruction will continue as needed to ensure student success. The vast majority of students meet grade-level expectations within this three-tiered approach. We invite you to view our district RtI plan which can be found on the West Genesee Central School District webpage. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Michael McGrath
Principal
