Young WGMS Scientists Showcase their Projects

On February 1, West Genesee Middle School students displayed Science Fair projects that explained the results of their research to their fellow students, judges, and families who came to view the exhibits.

WGMS Science Fair Judy Allen with StudentEach project was judged on the uniqueness of the problem, how well the hypothesis could be tested, design and procedures of the experiment, and how appropriately the materials and equipment were used to carry out the testing.

This year’s fair had 88 students who created 52 projects. Student projects were entered in the following categories: Human Sensory Perception, Psychology, Health and Consumer Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Engineering.

WGMS Science Fair Boys with JudgeScience teachers and co-coordinators, Judy Allen and Maggie Barrett recognized  eighth-grade students for their commitment to participating in the Science Fair each of their three years at West Genesee Middle School: Alexis Brown, Madison Everson, Olivia Mortas, Elsa Propper, Asa Woloszyn, Grace Morichelli, Keegan Ribble, Lucas Aldinger, Victoria Collins, Gavin Farino, Joshua Pierce, Jaden Mattimore, Carly Fura, Maria Toumbacaris, Emma Janes, Sarah Bacon, and Katelyn Hagadorn.

Participating judges were teachers, principals, retired professionals, professors from Syracuse University and graduate students from ESF who questioned and evaluated the  student exhibitors and their projects. There were over 35 judges who participated in the event. Many of the judges commented on how innovative the projects were this year.
